How to Soothe Sunburned Skin
Cool it Off
When your skin is sunburned, it feels hot and itchy. So the first thing is to cool it down. First, rinse off with cool water. Also dip a cloth in ice cold water and lay it over the sunburned skin. This will lower the body temperature down and fights off swelling. Never, ever use soap or any kind of cleansers on the affected area.
Apply Aloe Vera Gel
If you have a aloe vera plant at your home, clip off a couple of leaves and place them in the refrigerator. After an hour or two, peel off the top layer and squeeze out the gel. Apply it directly onto the affected area. You can also use the bottled aloe vera gel that we get in the market. Try to get an organic one. Store it in your fridge and apply the cold aloe vera gel on the sunburned skin. It fights pain, inflammation, cool down the skin and prevent the painful peeling of the skin.
Now that, your skin is cool on the outside, its time to work on your skin from inside. When your skin is damaged, specially in the case of sun burn, it becomes dehydrated and needs water more than anything else. Drink plenty of water to hydrate and moisturize your skin from inside. It will prevent the peeling of skin.
- Cut few very thin slices of potatoes and lay them directly over the sunburned skin. You can also use tomato slices in place of potato.
- Make your own after sun face mist. Brew some black tea and pour it in a spray bottle and refrigerate it. Spritz it on the face and other affected areas as needed to cool off the skin. The tanins present in the black tea prevents pain of sun burn.
- Mix a cup of fat-free milk with 4 cups of milk. Add few ice cubes. Apply compresses for 15-20 minutes and repeat in every 2-4 hours.
- Apply yogurt all over the sunburned skin. Rinse off with cold water. Pat dry the skin gently.
Apply Face Mask
When your skin is sun burned, it loses all its moisture and becomes dry, irritated and flaky. So if you have normal, combination or dry skin, go for a hydrating face mask that will not only put the moisture back to the skin, but also cool it down, soothe it and repair the flaky skin. For oily, acne prone skin, a clay based mask would be great. Clay has cooling properties and it will cool off the skin. But, since clay also absorbs the excess oil from the skin, so don’t use it frequently when you have sun burned skin.
Sun burned skin means the skin is suffering from massive moisture loss. So its very important that we replenish it regularly over the next few days with a good moisturizer. Apply the moisturizer before you put on your sunscreen. You can keep it in the fridge for some extra refreshment.
