Major Causes of Hair LossMajor Causes of Hair Loss

  1. Hair loss is common after a major surgical procedure, pregnancy or when you’re under a lot of stress. It is termed as telogen effluvium. This is when a lot of hair is shed daily while shampooing or combing. Hair loss can also be a result of medicines such as beta-blockers, antidepressants, etc. Some people shed handful of hair after a stressful period. If your hair loss is a possible result of surgery or pregnancy, you will need to give it time. If hair loss is a result of stress, try to relieve your worries. However, if it is a side effect of any medicine, you should consult a doctor.
  2. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common cause of hair loss, is caused due to genetic reasons. A person can inherit genes from either side of the family—maternal or paternal. The chances increase if both parents have it. If you are experiencing thinning of hair in a way that seems similar to your parent’s, your hair loss problem might be hereditary. Visit a dermatologist to get to the root of the problem and go for oral or topical medication.
  3. A lot of people suffer from thyroid disease, most of them being women. Thyroid hormone is responsible for hair growth, among many other things. So, if the body does not have an adequate amount of thyroid, it can lead to hair loss. Hence, hair loss can be a result of Hypothyroidism, i.e. less hormone production. In this case, the skin and nails become brittle. In some cases, Hyperthyroidism or too much hormone can also cause hair loss. If your hair loss is a result of thyroid disease, getting the thyroid levels to normal levels with thyroid hormone medication will help.
  4. A chronic autoimmune condition that is known as Lupus happens when your immune system attacks the healthy tissues in the body. This condition can lead to hair loss, among other symptoms. Some people have mild symptoms such as losing hair while shampooing. Severe conditioning leads to hair loss where hair comes out in patches, and the scalp develops rashes. If, along with hair loss, you are also experiencing fatigue, joint pain and other lupus-related symptoms, see a rheumatologist and get the condition treated with medications. Topical creams can be used to soothe the scalp rashes.
  5. Women who have an iron-deficient diet or get heavy periods suffer from iron deficiency anaemia, which causes hair loss. If you are diagnosed with Anaemia, include food rich in iron in your daily diet. Pork, fish, beef, green leafy vegetables and beans are high in iron. For better iron absorption, it is also advisable to include foods rich in vitamin C. Taking iron supplements is another option.
  6. Excessive styling, dyeing and shampooing can make hair prone to breakage. Mostly, hair loss is a result of a mix of styling treatments such as a combination of colouring and keratin. If you don’t notice any club-shaped bulbs at the ends of the hair that is shedding, your hair loss is most likely a result of damage from styling. In this case, stop overheating your hair. If you want to blow-dry your hair, do it on cool settings and avoid chemical products.

Now that you know the major causes of hair loss, it will be easier for you to figure out the causes and start the required treatment.
