How To Use Shikakai For Hair

But most of us girls have a busy hectic life today and we can’t take care of our hair as much as we would like to. Plus add the environmental factors like heat, dirt, dust, oil, pollution and our improper lifestyle. Result? Premature greying, hair fall, dandruff, dry hair etc. Hunderds of products are available today in the market to cater these hair concerns. But most of them are loaded with chemicals. Shikakai means ‘fruit for hair’. In India, shikakai has been used for centuries as a natural hair care ingredient. Shikakai is like a one-stop solution for all our hair problems. Shikakai promotes hair growth as well as make hair strong and beautiful. The best part of using shikakai on hair is that you don’t have to worry about chemicals getting absorbed by your hair and you still get clean, soft and healthy hair. Shikakai prevents premature ageing and eliminates dandruff. Shikakai can be used on hair in various ways. In this article, I have shared how to use shikakai for hair.

The benefits of shikakai at a glance

  • Shikakai has low PH level, so it’s very gentle on hair.
  • Shikakai is extremely good for hair growth and makes hair strong, beautiful, moisturized and shiny.

Shikakai Hair Oil 

Ingredients : Shikakai powder and base oil of your choice (olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil etc)

Shikakai hair oil is very easy to make. Mix 1 tbsp of shikakai powder with ½ cup of base oil and store the oil mix in a closed container. Give it a good shake and keep the container in a cool, dark place. Now let this oil mix rest for 3 weeks. Regularly shake the bottle well. After 3 weeks, the shikakai infused oil will be ready to use. Massage this oil regularly on scalp to get rid of all the scalp infections and have healthy, gorgeous hair.

Shikakai Hair Wash Powder 

Ingredients : Shikakai, reetha or soap nut, methi, tulsi leaves, green gram, curry leaves

You will need 500 gms of shikakai, 100 gms of reetha, 250 gms of methi, a bunch of tulsi leaves, 250 gms of green gram and again a bunch of curry leaves. Choose a couple of bright sunny days, collect all these ingredient and let them dry in open sun for 6 hours each day. In two days’ time, all these ingredients will dry up and become crispy. Now grind them to make fine powder and your shampoo is ready. Now depending on your hair length, take some powder and mix with water to make a paste. Apply this paste on hair instead of shampoo. Store the rest of the powder in a container.

Shikakai nourishes the hair and maintain its natural oil balance. Reetha is an excellent cleansing agent that takes all the impurities and dirt out of your hair. Methi conditions the hair and prevents hair fall and dandruff. Green gram promotes hair growth by preventing split ends. Curry leaves adds a beautiful shine to the hair and stops premature graying.

Shikakai Shampoo 

Ingredients : Shikakai, reetha and dried amla

First, take out the seeds from reetha. Now soak shikakai, reetha and dried amla in a bowl of water overnight. In the morning, boil these three ingredients together until they turn soft. While they are turning soft, foam will start to form on top. Strain the liquid and cool it off. Use this as your shampoo.

Reetha is an excellent cleanser and shikakai promotes healthy scalp. Dried amla is an extremely good hair conditioner. This shampoo is easy to make and doesn’t contain any chemical. With regular use, this herbal shikakai shampoo will make hair soft, silky and healthy.

Shikakai Hair Pack 

Ingredients : Shikakai powder, neem leaf powder, yogurt

Get a handful of neem leaves and some shikakai and let them get dried in the sun for two days. Oce they get crispy, grind them to make fine powder. You can also get store brought neem powder and shikakai powder, but homemade are always better. To make this hair pack, take some shikakai powder, neem powder and mix them with yogurt. Make a thick smooth paste and apply on the scalp. Wait for 30-45 minutes before rinsing off.

This hair pack is very good to treat dandruff and other scalp issues. The presence of yogurt makes it a conditioning hair pack too.

Shikakai Hair Pack to Kill Lice 

Ingredients : Shikakai powder, reetha powder, dried amla, camphor

Take shikakai powder & reetha powder and add dried amla and camphor to it. Mix with water and apply the paste on scalp. Leave on for 30 minutes and rinse off with warm water.

This hair pack will not only kill lice, but make your hair super soft and silky. Try this pack once or twice a week for few weeks and you will see the difference.
